JOHANNAH CHURCHILL

Johannah Churchill is a photographer drawn to people and systems under strain, and to what that strain leaves visible: care, labour, endurance. Making that visible takes the same instincts that shaped her earlier nursing practice, and images built on the kind of access that only attention, proximity, and trust can earn. She moves between portraiture, documentary, and participatory practice according to what a project needs: a likeness, a record, or a shared act of making. Her work is held in the collections of the National Portrait Gallery and the Wellcome Collection, and has been exhibited nationally, at venues including Open Eye Gallery, the Southbank Centre, The Sill, and the Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art. Her work includes the widely recognised Pandemic series alongside participatory and commissioned projects for organisations including the Gaia Foundation, Newcastle Hospitals Charity, and Arts Council England. She is from Newcastle upon Tyne, living and working across the North East, where she is a Lecturer in Contemporary Photography at the University of Sunderland.
